Hammer DeRoburt's Early Life and Career
Hammer DeRoburt was born in 1922. His grandfather was a former important leader of Nauru, called a Head Chief. Hammer also had some family from Banaba Island.
He went to school in Nauru and then studied at a college in Geelong, Australia. After finishing his studies, he came back to Nauru and started working as a teacher.
During World War II, when Japan controlled Nauru, most of the Nauruan people, including Hammer, were sent away to another island called Truk. When he returned to Nauru in 1946, he started working for the Department of Education.
In 1951, he wanted to join the first elections for the Local Government Council. Even though many people supported him, he was not allowed to run because of some problems with how he was nominated. People in Nauru protested, and a request sent to the United Nations was not considered.
In the 1955 elections, he tried again and was elected to the Council. In 1956, the Council chose him to be their main leader, called the Head Chief.
Leading Nauru as President
Hammer DeRoburt helped Nauru become an independent country on January 31, 1968. He then became its first president. He was president for most of the time until August 17, 1989.
In December 1976, some younger politicians took over, and Bernard Dowiyogo became president. But DeRoburt returned to power in May 1978. He was also not president for two short times in September and December 1986.
Personal Life and Legacy
In 1982, Queen Elizabeth II gave him a special honor, making him a 'Sir'.
Hammer DeRoburt is also known for bringing Australian rules football to Nauru. This sport became the country's national sport, which is very popular there.
He passed away in Melbourne, Australia, in 1992 because of diabetes.
