Hamont-Achel is a cool city and municipality in Belgium. It is located in the Limburg province. The city was formed in 1977. This happened when the city of Hamont joined with the village of Achel.

As of January 1, 2020, about 14,294 people live in Hamont-Achel. The total area is 43.66 square kilometers. This means there are around 315 people living in each square kilometer. Hamont-Achel is famous for the Trappist Abbey of Achel. Part of this abbey is a special brewery called Brouwerij de Achelse Kluis. It is one of only 11 Trappist breweries in the world! A Historic Explosion

On November 18, 1918, a very serious event happened in Hamont-Achel. Two German trains carrying supplies caught fire and exploded. This explosion was huge. It destroyed not only these trains but also three German ambulance trains. Most of the town was also badly damaged. More than 1,000 people lost their lives in this terrible accident.

In an area called Haarterheide, you can find an ancient Tumulus. A tumulus is a large mound of earth and stones. It was built a very long time ago as a burial place. This specific tumulus dates back to between 2000 and 1000 BC. It gives us a peek into the ancient history of the area.
