Hamza Abdi Barre (Somali: Xamse Cabdi Barre, Arabic: حمزة عبد بري) is a politician from Somalia. He has been the Prime Minister of Somalia since 2022. The President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, chose him for this important role on June 15, 2022. The Somali parliament then officially approved him on June 25, 2022.
Hamza Abdi Barre is also a member of parliament. He was elected to the House of the People, which is part of the Federal Parliament of Somalia. He represents the Afmadow area in Middle Juba. He began serving as a parliament member on December 28, 2021.
Early Life and Education
Hamza Abdi Barre was born in Kismayo, a city in Lower Juba, Somalia. He finished his first years of schooling in Somalia. In 2001, he earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Science and Technology in Yemen.
From 2003 to 2004, Hamza worked as a leader for a school network in Mogadishu. This network was called the Formal Private Education Network in Somalia (FPENS). In August 2005, he helped start Kismayo University. Later, in 2009, he received his master's degree from the International Islamic University in Malaysia. Before becoming a politician, Hamza taught for many years in Kismayo and Mogadishu. He was also a senior teacher at Mogadishu University.
Political Journey
Hamza Abdi Barre has been a strong supporter of the Union for Peace and Development Party for a long time. He has held several important jobs in the Somali government. From 2014 to 2015, he was an advisor to the governor of the Banaadir region. He also advised the mayor of Mogadishu, Hassan Mohamed Hussein.
He also worked as a senior advisor for the Ministry of Constitutional Affairs and Federalism. Before becoming Prime Minister, his biggest roles were as the secretary-general of the Peace and Development Party. He held this position from 2011 to 2017 under President Mohamud. From 2019 to 2020, he was the chairman of the Jubbaland Electoral Commission. Since June 26, 2022, Hamza Abdi Barre has served as the Prime Minister of Somalia. He works alongside President Mohamud, who was elected just one month before him.
