Hamza Abdi Barre (Xamse Cabdi Barre in Somali, حمزة عبد بري in Arabic) is an important politician from Somalia. He has been the Prime Minister of Somalia since June 2022. The President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, chose him for this big job. A few days later, the parliament (which is like the country's main law-making group) agreed with the President's choice. Hamza Abdi Barre is also a member of the House of the People, which is part of Somalia's parliament. He was elected to represent the Afmadow area in December 2021.
Early Life and Education
Hamza Abdi Barre was born in Kismayo, a city in the Lower Juba region of Somalia, in 1972 or 1973. He belongs to the Ogaden branch of the Darod clan.
He finished his early schooling in Somalia. Later, he earned his first university degree, a bachelor's degree, from the University of Science and Technology in Yemen in 2001. From 2003 to 2004, Hamza worked as the Executive Director of a school network in Mogadishu called FPENS. In August 2005, he helped start Kismayo University. In 2009, he earned his master's degree from the International Islamic University in Malaysia. Before becoming a politician, Hamza Abdi Barre spent many years teaching in Kismayo and Mogadishu. He even became a senior lecturer at Mogadishu University.
Political Career
Hamza Abdi Barre has been a strong supporter of the Union for Peace and Development Party for a long time. He has held many different jobs in the government. From 2014 to 2015, he was an administrative advisor to the governor of the Banaadir region and later to the mayor of Mogadishu. He also worked as a senior advisor for the Ministry of Constitutional Affairs and Federalism.
Before becoming Prime Minister, some of his most important political roles included being the secretary-general of the Peace and Development Party from 2011 to 2017. He also served as the chairman of the Jubbaland Electoral Commission from 2019 to 2020. Since June 26, 2022, Hamza Abdi Barre has been serving as the Prime Minister of Somalia, working alongside President Mohamud.
