In 2010, Time magazine included Han Han on its list of the 100 most influential people. The New Statesman also ranked him among the world's 50 most influential figures that same year.

Early Life and School Days

Han Han wrote his first essay, Unhappy Days, when he was in junior middle school. He got into Shanghai's Song Jiang No. 2 High School because of his sports skills.

In 1999, during his first year of high school, Han Han won a top prize in China's New Concept Writing Competition. His winning essay was called Seeing Ourselves in a Cup.

Later that year, Han Han failed seven subjects in his exams. This meant he had to repeat the year. News of this spread and started a big discussion in China. People debated how schools should teach students. They wondered if schools should focus on all-around learning or on special skills. After failing seven more subjects the next year, Han Han decided to leave school.

Career Journey

Writing Adventures

After leaving school, Han Han wrote many essays. Some of these were One Degree Below Freezing and Press Release 2003. These essays were published in different places.

His first novel, Triple Door, was about a junior high student's life in Shanghai. This book made him very well-known across China. Over twenty million copies of Triple Door have been sold, making it one of China's bestselling books in the last 20 years. He also published other novels like Like a Speeding Youth and Riot in Chang'an City.

Han Han loves racing, so he became a professional rally driver. This meant he wrote less often. However, he kept writing on his blog about current events. Many people read his articles, and they often started big discussions. Han Han's blog has been viewed over 300 million times, making it the most popular personal blog in China.

In September 2006, Han Han released his first album called R-18. He wrote all the lyrics for the songs himself. In 2014, he became a product ambassador for the Oneplus smartphone brand in China.

Starting Magazines

On April 19, 2009, Han Han opened his own online bookstore called Han Han's Bookstore on Taobao. He said the store would only sell his original autographed books. So many books were sold that the online system thought it was a mistake!

On May 1, 2009, Han Han announced on his blog that he was starting a new magazine. He asked people to send in articles and apply for jobs. He offered very high pay for articles, much more than other magazines in China. For example, a new cover story could earn a writer up to RMB 2,000 for every 1,000 words. This was 10 to 40 times the usual rate!

Han Han also asked for articles for a special column. He wanted to publish articles that the magazine might not agree with or that weren't perfect. He called this the "braindead" column. He wanted to show many different ideas and opinions.

Within five days, Han Han received over 10,000 articles from all over China. Many people were excited because the high fees meant writers could earn more money and be more independent.

Because of publishing rules in China, Han Han's magazine faced some delays. But on July 6, 2010, his magazine Party was finally published. It quickly became the most popular book on Amazon.cn even before it was officially released.

On June 11, 2012, Han Han launched his digital magazine called One (一个). He worked with the same team from his Party magazine. He first released an app for iOS phones, then for Android phones. In One magazine, he wanted readers to take a few minutes each day to read and think. Every day, the magazine offers one picture, one article, and one question-and-answer section.

Rally Racing Career

Han Han became a professional rally driver. Some people thought he might have money problems because writers and race car drivers in China earned less than people in other jobs. But Han Han kept racing because it made him feel successful. Winning races also helped him prove that he was good at many things, not just writing.

Here are some of Han Han's achievements in racing:

  • 2003: He raced for Beijing Extreme Speed Racing Team. He finished 6th in the Shanghai race and 8th in the Changchun race.
  • 2004: He joined Yunnan Red River Racing Team. He won 1st place in the Formula BMW Asia Qualifying Race.
  • 2004: He also raced in the annual Formula BMW race. He finished 1st in the Rookie Cup in Japan.

  • 2009: Han Han raced in the 2009 Rally Australia, which is part of the World Rally Championship (WRC).
  • 2012: He won the Chinese Rally Championship with Subaru Rally Team China.

After his experience at the WRC Rally Australia in 2009, he wrote a blog post. In it, he used humor to share his thoughts on how China's race management and other things compared to Australia.
