Han Wo facts for kids

Han Wo (born around 842–844, died around 923) was a famous Chinese poet. He lived during the end of the Tang dynasty and the start of the Min Kingdom. His special name, called a courtesy name, was Zhiyao. He also had an art name called Yushan-Qiaoren. He was from a place called Jingzhao, which was near the capital city, Chang'an. A collection of his poems, called the Xianglian Ji, is still known today.

Han Wo's Life Story

Early Life and Birth

Han Wo was born around 842 or 844. He grew up in Wannian, Jingzhao, which is now known as Xi'an in Shaanxi Province. His father, Han Zhan, took a special government test the same year as another famous poet, Li Shangyin. Li Shangyin was connected to Han Wo's family through marriage. It is said that Li Shangyin recognized young Han Wo's talent for poetry and praised him.

His Time in Politics

In 889, Han Wo passed the important imperial examination. This test allowed people to become government officials. After passing, he became a scholar at the Hanlin Academy. He also worked as a low-ranking official in the government. Eventually, he became the Vice-Minister of Defense.

Han Wo earned the trust of Emperor Zhaozong of Tang. They worked together against powerful palace officials called eunuchs. Han Wo was even suggested for a very high position, like a chancellor (a top advisor). However, a powerful person named Zhu Wen did not like him. Because of this, Han Wo was sent away from the capital to Pu Prefecture.

Later Years and Death

After being sent away, Han Wo never returned to work for the government. He spent his final years in the Min Kingdom. He passed away around 923. He never went back to the capital city where he had once served the emperor.

Han Wo's Poetry

Han Wo is known as a poet from the "late Tang" period. This time in Chinese history lasted from the early 800s until 907.

One of his most famous collections of poems is called the Xianglian Ji. His poetry is known for its beautiful and vivid descriptions. The Xianglian Ji even gave its name to a special style of poetry called xianglian-ti. This style is often linked to Han Wo's unique way of writing. Other poems he wrote are found in a collection called the Yushan-Qiaoren Ji.
