What is Hanalei Bay Like?
Hanalei Bay has almost 2 miles (about 3.2 kilometers) of sandy beach. It is surrounded by tall, green mountains, making it a very scenic place.
During the summer, the water in the bay is usually calm and clear. This makes it perfect for activities like sailing, stand-up paddleboarding, and swimming. The community of Princeville looks over the bay from the northeast.
When winter arrives, the waves in Hanalei Bay get much bigger. This makes it a very popular place for surfers from all over the world!
A Look Back in Time: Hanalei's History
Long ago, the people of ancient Hawaii used the wet areas around Hanalei Bay to grow a plant called taro. Taro was a very important food for them.
Later, around the 1860s, farmers started growing rice in the same wetlands. Rice became a big crop for the islands, and it was shipped to Honolulu.
The Hanalei Pier
The Hanalei Pier was built to help farmers move their rice and other crops to ships. This made it easier to send their goods to market.
Today, the pier is a favorite spot for families and friends. People love to go there for fishing, picnics, swimming, and just playing by the water. It's a great place to gather and enjoy the bay.
A Shipwreck Story
On April 5, 1824, a royal yacht called Pride of Hawaii sank near the Waiʻoli River, which is on the southwest side of the bay. This happened because the ship hit a reef about 5 feet (1.5 meters) deep, not far from the shore.
Years later, in 1844, a big storm washed a large part of the ship's hull onto the beach. Most of the old ship still rests buried in the mud at the bottom of the bay.
From 1995 to 2000, scientists and archaeologists carefully dug up parts of the wreck. They found more than 1,200 old items from the ship! They even found a 40-foot (12-meter) section of the ship's back part. After studying it, they carefully re-buried it where they found it to protect it.
Early Missions and Schools
The Waiʻoli mission, also on the southwest side of the bay, was an important place. It had a school and a church that were built in the 1830s. These places helped educate and support the local community.
Hanalei Bay in Books and Movies
Hanalei Bay has inspired many artists! The famous Japanese author Haruki Murakami wrote a short story called "Hanalei Bay." This story is part of his book Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman.
The beautiful scenery of Hanalei Bay has also been featured in movies. It was a filming location for the 1958 musical film South Pacific. More recently, it was also seen in the 2011 movie The Descendants, which starred George Clooney.
