Hanamāʻulu is a special kind of community in Kauaʻi County, Hawaiʻi, United States. It's called a census-designated place (CDP), which means it's an area that looks like a town but isn't officially a city. The name "Hanamāʻulu" means "tired bay" in the Hawaiian language.
This place is very old and important in Hawaiian history. It's known as the birthplace of Kawelo, who was a member of Kauai's ruling family long ago. In 2020, about 4,994 people lived here.
Exploring Hanamaulu's Location
Hanamāʻulu is found on the eastern side of the beautiful island of Kauai. It's located at coordinates 21°59′51″N 159°21′26″W / 21.99750°N 159.35722°W. Just south of Hanamāʻulu is another community called Lihue. The Hanamaulu Stream creates a natural border between these two areas.
The entire community covers about 3.7 square kilometers (1.45 square miles). Most of this area is land, about 3.3 square kilometers (1.27 square miles). The rest, about 0.5 square kilometers (0.18 square miles), is water. This water area is mainly the northern part of Hanamaulu Bay.

In 2000, there were 3,272 people living in Hanamāʻulu. By 2020, the population had grown to 4,994 people. This shows that more and more people are choosing to live in this area.
Many different groups of people make up the community of Hanamāʻulu. In 2000, a large part of the population, about 61.5%, was Asian. About 5.8% were Pacific Islander, and 8.2% were White.
