Hanes Mall is a large shopping mall in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It is located near I-40 and Silas Creek Parkway. The road next to it, Hanes Mall Boulevard, is named after the mall. This area is very busy, with over 250 businesses nearby.

The mall is huge, covering about 1,558,860 square feet. It has more than 200 stores and places to eat. The main, big stores are called "anchor stores." Hanes Mall has three open anchor stores: Belk, Dillard's, and JCPenney. There are also two empty anchor spots where Macy's and Sears used to be.

For many years, Hanes Mall was the biggest enclosed shopping mall in North Carolina. However, in 2004, SouthPark Mall in Charlotte became larger after it expanded.

Mall History

Early Days and Growth

Hanes Mall first opened its doors in 1975. When it first started, it had three main stores: Belk, JCPenney, and Sears. These stores were part of the mall's original north wing.

In 1990, the mall got much bigger. A new section was added to the south. This new part brought in more big stores like Ivey's (which soon became Dillard's) and Thalhimer's. Thalhimer's later changed its name to Hecht's in 1992, and then to Macy's in 2006. The expansion also added a new food court where people could grab a bite to eat.

Mall Design and Features

Because of how the mall was built, you have to walk through the JCPenney store to get from one side of the mall to the other. The mall is also built on the side of a hill. This means if you enter on the east side, you are on the first floor. But if you enter on the west side, you are on the second floor!

Most of Hanes Mall has two floors. However, the Belk store and the former Macy's store each have an extra floor, making them three stories tall.

Around the mall's parking lot is a road called Hanes Mall Circle. Many other businesses are located on this road. You can enter the mall parking lot from five different places. These entrances are off Silas Creek Parkway, Hanes Mall Boulevard, and Stratford Road.

For many years, Hanes Mall also had a movie theater called General Cinema. It had four screens and was open until October 10, 2000. Today, a Texas Roadhouse restaurant stands where the movie theater used to be. Another restaurant, Golden Corral, is in what was once the theater's parking lot. The movie theater was a part of the mall for 25 years.

A fun feature at the mall is a large, working carousel. You can find it on the lower level. The company that owns and runs Hanes Mall today is called CBL & Associates Properties, Inc..

In November 2011, a popular clothing store called H&M opened at Hanes Mall. This was only the second H&M store to open in the Carolinas, with the first one being in Raleigh.

Recent Store Changes

Over the years, some of the big anchor stores have closed. On November 8, 2018, it was announced that Sears would be closing its doors. The Sears store at Hanes Mall closed in February 2019. Sears was one of the very first stores to open when the mall began in 1975.

Then, on January 8, 2020, Macy's also announced it would be closing. The Macy's store at Hanes Mall closed in March 2020. These closures were part of bigger plans by both companies to close many stores across the country.
