Hani Shukrallah (1950 – 5 May 2019) was an important Egyptian journalist and political thinker. He was known for leading major newspapers and news websites in Egypt. He worked as the main editor for Al-Ahram Weekly and later started Ahram Online. Both of these are part of the Al-Ahram Foundation, which is run by the Egyptian government.

Hani Shukrallah's Early Life

Hani Shukrallah was born in 1950 in Cairo, Egypt. He grew up in a Coptic Christian family in the city. His sister, Hala Shukrallah, later became the first Coptic woman to lead a political party in Egypt.

During the 1970s, when Anwar Sadat was president, Hani Shukrallah was a student activist. He believed in ideas that focused on fairness for everyone. He also helped start the human rights movement in Egypt. In 1985, he co-founded the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR). This group worked to document human rights issues in Egypt.

Journalism and Writing Career

In 1991, Hani Shukrallah became a managing editor and then the editor-in-chief of Al-Ahram Weekly. This was a newspaper owned by the Egyptian government. From 1995, he wrote his own column called "Reflections."

He was removed from his editor role in 2005. Around that time, he had written many articles that questioned Egyptian politics. He wanted the government to be clearer about how it would allow more political freedom.

After leaving his main editor job, he continued to work for the Al-Ahram Foundation. He became a consultant for their think tank, the Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies. In 2009, he helped start the Al-Shorouk daily newspaper and served as its co-editor.

In 2010, Shukrallah launched Ahram Online. This was an English-language news website from the Al-Ahram Foundation, and he was its editor-in-chief.

Throughout his career, Hani Shukrallah also wrote for other international publications. These included Al-Hayat and The Guardian. His main topics were Egyptian politics, the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, and the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Views After the 2011 Revolution

After the 2011 Egyptian revolution, Hani Shukrallah joined the Egyptian Social Democratic Party. However, he later left the party.

He became a critic of the military council that took power after President Mubarak left office. He believed they tried to slow down the revolution. He also criticized the Muslim Brotherhood. He supported the removal of Mohamed Morsi from power in 2013. Shukrallah wrote that millions of people protested against Morsi, showing a huge public demand for change.
