History
Hanlontown was founded on October 9, 1899. This happened when a railroad line, the Chicago and North Western Railroad, was built through the area. The city was named after James Hanlon, who owned the land. Hanlontown officially became a city on January 18, 1902.
Geography
Hanlontown is located at 43°16′51″N 93°22′46″W / 43.28083°N 93.37944°W. The city covers a total area of about 0.97 square miles (2.51 square kilometers). All of this area is land, with no water.

Education
Public schools in Hanlontown are part of the Central Springs Community School District. This district was formed on July 1, 2011. It combined the North Central Community School District and the Nora Springs–Rock Falls Community School District. Before this, Hanlontown was in the North Central district.
Town celebration
Hanlontown has an annual event called "Sundown Day." It happens on June 21, or the weekend before. This celebration is special because it matches the time when the sun sets on the railroad tracks, making them look golden.
