Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Hans Christian Andersen Literature Award is a special prize given in Denmark. It's a big literary award that started in 2010.

This award is given out every two years to a living author. The author's stories and writing style should remind people of the famous Danish storyteller, Hans Christian Andersen. It's one of the biggest literary prizes in the world! The winner gets 500,000 Danish Kroner, which is about £60,000 or $90,000. They also receive a cool bronze statue called "The Ugly Duckling," made by sculptor Stine Ring Hansen.

You might see Paulo Coelho listed as a winner for 2007, even though the award officially began in 2010. This is because in 2007, the city of Odense gave Coelho an honorary award. People liked it so much that the organizers decided to make it a regular event. That's how the Hans Christian Andersen Literature Award was born! So, while 2010 was the first official award, Coelho's special honor is also recognized by the award organizers.
