A Look Back: Hanston's History
Hanston started out with a different name! It was first called Marena when it was founded in 1878. In 1902, the city was renamed Hanston. It got its new name from the local Hann family. Hanston was also an important stop and shipping point for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.

Hanston is located along K-156, which is a state highway. The Kansas and Oklahoma Railroad also runs through the area. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city covers about 0.28 square miles (0.70 square kilometers) of land. There is no water area within the city limits.

Schools
The public schools in Hanston are part of the Hodgeman County USD 227 school district. This district took over from the former Hanston USD 228 in 2011. The district has two schools:
- Hodgeman County Elementary School
- Hodgeman County Middle/High School
The Hodgeman County High School is located in Jetmore. Its sports teams are known as the Longhorns. Before the school districts combined, the Hanston High School mascot was the Hanston Elks.
The Hanston Elks were very successful in sports! They won several Kansas State Championships:
- 8-Man DII Football: 1989, 1990, 1999, 2001, 2002, and 2004
- 1A Boys Basketball: 1978, 1989, 2004, and 2005
Library
Hanston also has its own public library, called the Hanston City Library. It's a great place for reading and learning.
