Hardenberg is a city and municipality in the eastern part of the Netherlands. It is located in the province of Overijssel, close to the German border. About 60,000 people live in the whole municipality. Around 19,000 people live in the city of Hardenberg itself.
Hardenberg received its city rights in 1362. These rights were given by Jan van Arkel, who was the Bishop of Utrecht at that time. A famous long-distance walking path called the Pieterpad goes through Hardenberg. Many people in this area speak a local language called Dutch Low Saxon.

Hardenberg is a great place for cycling. Each August, a big bicycle race called the Great Hardenburg Bicycle Race takes place here. The top three winners are called the "Wheeler-Kings" of the town. They also get special passes to the local museum for life!
