Hardin is a small city in Marshall County, Kentucky, in the United States. It is known as a "home rule-class city," which means it has some power to govern itself. In 2020, about 580 people lived there.
History of Hardin
The town of Hardin started growing around the year 1890. This was when the Paducah, Tennessee and Alabama Railroad built a train station in the area. The land for the station was bought from a local landowner named Hardin D. Irvan. The city was named after him.
A post office opened in Hardin on October 31, 1891. The town officially became a city on March 25, 1952.
Geography of Hardin
Hardin is located in the southern part of Marshall County. It is about 7 miles (11 km) north of Benton, which is the county seat. It is also about 11 miles (18 km) north of Murray.
Two main roads pass through Hardin:
- Kentucky Route 402 (Aurora Highway) goes through the northern part of the city.
- U.S. Route 641 crosses the western part of the city.
According to the United States Census Bureau, Hardin covers a total area of about 0.7 square miles (1.8 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with only a very small amount of water. The city is on the west side of the valley of the Clarks River. This river flows north and eventually joins the Tennessee River.
