Hardin is a small village in Illinois, United States. It is the main town, also called the county seat, of Calhoun County. In 2020, about 801 people lived there. This was fewer people than in 2010, when 967 people lived in Hardin.

Early History of Hardin
Hardin was first called Terry's Landing. This name came from its first settler, Dr. William Terry. This was mentioned in a speech given in Hardin in 1876.
Later, in 1835, Benjamin F. Childs bought the landing. He changed its name to Childs' Landing. The village's name became Hardin in 1847. This happened when it became the county seat of Calhoun County.
Why the Name Changed
The new name honored John J. Hardin. He was a former congressman and a colonel in the army. He was killed in the Mexican–American War earlier that year.
Becoming the County Seat
Hardin became the county seat after the old courthouse in Gilead burned down. The county seat was temporarily moved to Hamburg. Benjamin Childs then offered five acres of land and 50,000 bricks for a new courthouse. He also offered a free barbecue dinner! Because of his offer, people voted to move the county seat to Hardin in 1847.
Education
The school district for Hardin is called Calhoun Community Unit School District 40.
Notable People
Some well-known people have connections to Hardin:
- Thomas D. Bare (1867–1931) was an Illinois newspaper editor and state senator. He lived in Hardin.
- Jerry Corbett (1917–1997) was a businessman, baseball player, and politician. He was born in Hardin.
- Bill McGee (1909–1987) was a major league baseball pitcher. He played for the St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Giants.
