Hariss bin Harun (born 19 November 1990) is a professional footballer from Singapore. He plays mainly as a defensive midfielder or a centre-back. Hariss is the captain for both the Singapore Premier League club Lion City Sailors and the Singapore national team.
He holds the record as Singapore's youngest player to debut for the national team. He was only 16 years and 217 days old when he played his first international match. Hariss is known for being a very flexible player. He is strong in tackles and also good at creating plays. Even though he usually plays in midfield, he can also play as a defender. He is also recognized for his great leadership skills. He used to be the captain for LionsXII and Johor Darul Ta'zim.
Hariss is also the current vice-president of the Football Association of Singapore.

Hariss's Club Journey
Starting with Young Lions
Hariss started his football career with Young Lions in the S.League in 2007. He became the youngest player in the S-League at just 16 years old. The Football Association of Singapore gave him special permission to play. This was because players usually had to be 18 or older.
In August 2007, Hariss won a contest called 'Who's The Next' by Nike. This win gave him a chance to train at FC Barcelona's famous youth academy, La Masia. He trained there for a week with other young players from Asia. Hariss impressed the coaches and even won an MVP award.
The year 2008 was tough for Hariss. He got a serious knee injury during a league match. This injury kept him out of the game for a whole year. He missed important matches, including the World Cup qualifiers.
In 2010, Hariss had another injury. He broke his right leg in a match. This meant he missed another big tournament, the 2010 ASEAN Football Championship. Despite his injuries, Hariss's great playing was noticed. He won the S.League Young Player of the Year award in 2010.
Playing for LionsXII

In December 2011, Hariss joined LionsXII. This team played in the 2012 Malaysia Super League. He played his first game for LionsXII in January 2012. He scored his first goal against Sabah on January 21. Hariss even scored three goals in one game against Sabah, which is called a hat-trick. LionsXII finished second in their first season.
Hariss missed the start of the 2013 season because of another injury. He broke his right leg during a match. He returned to play in February 2013. Hariss was a very important player for LionsXII. He helped them win the Malaysia Super League title in 2013. They also had an amazing unbeaten record at home.
In July 2013, Hariss had an offer to play for a team in Portugal, Rio Ave. But he decided not to join them. This was due to his National Service duties and other reasons.
Time with Johor Darul Ta'zim

After not joining Rio Ave, Hariss signed with Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) in Malaysia in November 2013. He signed a two-year deal. He scored his first goal for JDT in February 2014. In his first season, Hariss helped JDT win their first Malaysian Super League title.
On October 31, 2015, he helped JDT win the 2015 AFC Cup Final. This made him the first Singaporean to win this important trophy. Hariss signed a new contract with JDT in November 2015. He became the highest-paid Singaporean footballer ever. He continued to help JDT win many more titles.
Loan to Hospitalet
In February 2017, Hariss was supposed to join a Spanish team called Hospitalet. This would have made him the first Singaporean to play in Spain. However, the move was cancelled because of a tax problem for the Spanish club.
Loan to Home United
On March 10, 2017, Hariss returned to Singapore. He joined Home United on a three-month loan. He played his first game for them on April 1. His loan was later extended until the end of the season.
Back to Johor Darul Ta'zim
Hariss returned to JDT for the 2018 season. He helped them win the 2018 Piala Sumbangsih in their first game. On July 10, 2018, he scored his first goal of the season. This goal helped JDT win their fifth league title in a row.
In 2019, Hariss became the club captain of JDT. He led the team in their first ever 2019 AFC Champions League group stage. He helped JDT get their first point and then their first win in this competition. He ended the season by leading JDT to win the 2019 Malaysia Super League, Malaysia Cup, and the 2019 Piala Sumbangsih. He also won the 2020 Malaysia Super League and 2020 Piala Sumbangsih in 2020.
On May 10, 2021, Hariss and JDT decided to end his contract. He wanted to return to Singapore to be closer to his family. This was especially important because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Joining Lion City Sailors
Hariss signed with Lion City Sailors on May 10, 2021. In his first season, he helped them win the Singapore Premier League. The next season, he won the 2022 Singapore Community Shield. He also captained the team in their first ever AFC Champions League group stage.
On December 9, 2023, Hariss lifted the 2023 Singapore Cup trophy. On December 13, 2023, he set a new record. He became the Singaporean player with the most appearances (18) in the AFC Champions League.
On September 19, 2024, Hariss scored a great goal from outside the box. This helped the Sailors win 2–0 against Zhejiang Professional. Hariss captained the Sailors in the 2025 AFC Champions League Two final on May 18, 2025. He became the first Singaporean to captain a team in a continental final. The Sailors finished as runner-up in a close 1–2 defeat.
Hariss's International Career
Youth Teams
Hariss played for all of Singapore's youth national teams. He was part of the Singapore under-23 squad. This team won the bronze medal at the Southeast Asian Games in 2007, 2009, and 2013.
Senior National Team
Hariss made his debut for the Singapore national team on June 24, 2007. He was only 16 years and 217 days old. This made him the youngest player ever to play for Singapore. He broke the record held by Singaporean football legend Fandi Ahmad.
Hariss was part of the Singapore team for the 2012 AFF Championship. However, he got a shin injury during a game. This injury meant he could not play for the rest of the tournament. Singapore went on to win the competition.
Hariss scored his first goal for the senior national team on June 7, 2013. It was in a friendly match against Laos.
On June 16, 2015, Hariss had the chance to captain the national team against Japan. The match ended in a surprising 0–0 draw. On June 13, 2017, Hariss captained Singapore in a friendly match against Argentina. He almost scored a goal in that game.
Hariss scored his 7th international goal on September 11, 2018. This helped the new coach, Fandi Ahmad, get his first win. On November 14, 2019, Hariss played his 100th game for the national team against Qatar. He became the 13th Singaporean footballer to reach 100 international appearances.
In December 2024, Hariss was called up for the 2024 ASEAN Championship. This was his seventh time playing in this tournament.
Hariss's Personal Life
Hariss went to St. Michael's Primary School and St. Gabriel's Secondary School. He also earned a diploma in Sport & Wellness Management.
His parents are from Singapore and are of Malayali Muslim background. His father, Harun bin Habib Mohamed, is his football advisor. Hariss says his father and uncle helped him get interested in football when he was six years old.
On March 9, 2014, Hariss married his girlfriend, Syahirah Mohamad. They had been together for over two years.
Hariss is featured in the video game eFootball Pro Evolution Soccer 2020. He is the second Singaporean player to be in a video game. Hariss also became a property agent in September 2023.
On April 29, 2025, Hariss became the vice-president of the Football Association of Singapore. This made him the first active player to be part of the council.
