Harmony is a small community called a hamlet in Alberta, a province in Canada. It's located right next to the Springbank Airport. Harmony is about 23 kilometers (14 miles) west of downtown Calgary and 10 kilometers (6 miles) southeast of the town of Cochrane. When it's fully built, Harmony is planned to be quite large, covering about 707 hectares (1,747 acres). It's expected to have around 10,000 people living in 3,500 homes.
How Harmony Grew
Harmony's plans were first approved by Rocky View County in February 2007. A more detailed plan for the first part of Harmony was approved in October 2008. In 2012, people thought it would take about 15 years to build the whole community.
Even with these plans, some local groups were worried when the first building stage was proposed in 2012. The Springbank Airport Business and Pilots Association, for example, were concerned about how the new community would fit with the airport. They worried about safety and that future residents might complain about airport noise. Other local people were concerned about how Harmony would change the existing rural area and if it would mean losing important farmland.
Despite these worries, the Rocky View County Council approved the first stage of building in July 2012. The first family moved into Harmony in 2016. Within two years, the population grew to 249 people. Harmony was officially named a hamlet on June 11, 2024, when its population was estimated to be about 1,500 people.
Who Lives in Harmony?
In 2021, Statistics Canada counted the people living in Harmony. There were 757 people living in 230 homes. The land area of Harmony is about 6.92 square kilometers (2.67 square miles). This means there were about 109.5 people living in each square kilometer in 2021.
Before that, in 2018, a local count by Rocky View County showed that Harmony had a population of 249 people.
