Harold Crowchild, also known as Iron Shield (born March 18, 1915 – died January 12, 2013), was an important elder from the Tsuutʼina Nation in Canada. He was also a brave veteran who fought in World War II.
Harold Crowchild was very special. He was the last surviving Tsuu T'ina veteran from World War II. He was also the last surviving veteran from any of the Treaty 7 First Nations who fought in that war.
Harold Crowchild's Life Story
Harold Crowchild was involved in the Calgary Stampede for many years. He started taking part in this famous rodeo and festival even before World War II began. He continued to participate in the Stampede until he was in his 80s!
Joining the Army
In 1942, Harold Crowchild decided to join the Canadian Army. He volunteered at the Currie Barracks in Calgary. At that time, not many First Nations people from his area were in the military. Because of this, some Tsuu T'ina Chief and other leaders questioned his choice.
But Harold Crowchild was determined. He later said in an interview, "We wanted to fight, what the hell." This showed his strong desire to serve his country.
Serving in World War II
During World War II, Harold Crowchild was part of the 4th Canadian Armoured Division Headquarters. He served in several countries, including the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, and Germany.
He had important jobs during the war. He operated powerful Sherman tanks. He also guarded German prisoners-of-war. For his service in the North West Europe Campaign, he received five special medals:
- The 1939-1945 Star
- The France and Germany Star
- The Defence Medal
- The Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Overseas Clasp
- The War Medal 1939-1945
His Final Years
Harold Crowchild passed away on January 12, 2013. He was 97 years old. A special memorial service was held at his home on the Tsuu T'ina Nation reserve. After that, a traditional funeral took place at the Sarcee Seven Chiefs Complex.
Tsuu T'ina Chief Roy Whitney spoke about Harold Crowchild's passing. He said it was "a sad week for the Tsuu T'ina Nation and for Canada." Harold Crowchild is remembered as a brave veteran and a respected elder.
