Roger Haroldo Rodas Melgar (born May 29, 1946 – died June 14, 2020) was an important person from Guatemala. He was an economist, which means he studied how money and resources work. He was also a politician and a diplomat, which means he worked with other countries.

Haroldo Rodas's Life and Work

Haroldo Rodas served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Guatemala. This job is like being the main diplomat for a country, handling relationships with other nations. He worked for President Álvaro Colom from January 14, 2008, to January 14, 2012. He was the only minister in President Colom's team who stayed for the whole four-year term.

Before this, he was a vice-minister for foreign affairs from January 1, 1991, to June 30, 1992.

Education and Early Career

Haroldo Rodas studied economics at the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala. He also earned a master's degree in international economics. He studied at the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva, Switzerland.

Before becoming the foreign minister, he was the Secretary General of the Secretariat for Central American Economic Integration (SIECA). He held this important role starting in April 1995.

Working with International Organizations

Haroldo Rodas also worked with many important international groups. These included the United Nations Development Programme, which helps countries develop. He also worked for the Inter-American Development Bank, which provides loans for projects.

Other organizations he worked with were the Union of Banana Exporting Countries, the Organization of American States, and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. These roles show his dedication to international cooperation.

Haroldo Rodas passed away on June 14, 2020. He was 74 years old. He died from COVID-19 during the COVID-19 pandemic in Guatemala.
