Harrellsville is a small town located in Hertford County, North Carolina, in the United States. In 2010, about 106 people lived there. By 2020, the population was 85. It's a quiet place with a rich history.

Town Location

Harrellsville is found in the southeastern part of Hertford County. A main road, North Carolina Highway 45, goes right through the town. This road connects Harrellsville to other nearby places.

If you head northwest on Highway 45 for about 11 miles, you'll reach Winton. Winton is important because it's the main town, or county seat, of Hertford County. If you travel south for about 7 miles, you'll arrive at Colerain.

The United States Census Bureau says that Harrellsville covers a total area of about 0.75 square kilometers. All of this area is land, meaning there are no large bodies of water like lakes or rivers within the town limits.

The town's population has changed quite a bit over the years. In the year 2000, there were 102 people living in Harrellsville. These people lived in 47 different homes, and 36 of those were families.

The population was made up of different groups. About 71% of the people were White, and about 21% were African American. No one was recorded as Native American, Asian, or Pacific Islander at that time. Also, no one was recorded as Hispanic or Latino.

Town History

Harrellsville was founded in the 1820s by families named Harrell. The town got its first post office in 1827. A man named Abner Harrell became the postmaster in 1833.

The town was first called Bethel. But in the 1860s, its name was changed to Harrellsville. This was done to honor Abner Harrell. His house was one of the biggest buildings in town for a long time. It stood until around the year 2000, when the land was bought and the house was taken down.

A special area in the town, called the Harrellsville Historic District, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. This means it's an important place with historical value.

Famous Person

  • Robert Holmes Smith (1898–1943) was a naval officer from Harrellsville. He was a Commander in the U.S. Navy's Pacific Submarine Fleet during World War II.
