Winton is a small town in North Carolina, United States. It is the main town, also called the county seat, of Hertford County. The town is led by a Mayor and five Council members. In 2020, about 629 people lived there.

History of Winton

Winton became the main town of Hertford County in 1766. It has been an important place ever since.

During the American Civil War, in 1862, Union soldiers led by Colonel Rush C. Hawkins burned down the town. This was a difficult time for Winton.

Some of Winton's oldest buildings show off beautiful styles like Italianate and Queen Anne from the 1800s. These buildings are part of the Winton Historic District.

In the 1920s, Winton got new connections! A highway (now US Highway 13) linked it to Ahoskie in 1924. A year later, a steel bridge was built over the Chowan River. This was the first bridge of its kind in the county.

Important historical places in Winton include the C. S. Brown School Auditorium, Gray Gables, and the King Parker House. These places are listed on the National Register of Historic Places because they are very important to the town's history.
