The Story of Harris: How It Began
Harris started in 1889 when a railway line, the Burlington, Cedar Rapids & Northern Railway, was built through Fairview Township. The city was named after one of its founders, A. W. Harris.
A man named Homer E. Richards was the postmaster of Harris from 1900 to 1910. He later moved his family to Sibley in 1911 after being elected county treasurer.
Harris has been acting as a city since 1903. This was the year the Rock Island Line took over the railroad. However, the official papers that made Harris a city couldn't be found. So, in 1979, a special law was passed to officially recognize Harris as a city.
