Harris Hill is a small community, sometimes called a hamlet, located in Clarence, a town in Erie County, New York, in the United States. It is also known as a census-designated place (CDP). In 2020, about 5,839 people lived there.

Harris Hill is part of the larger Buffalo-Niagara Falls metropolitan area. The area gets its name from Asa Harris. He was an officer in the American Colonial Army. He opened a tavern near the top of a small hill northeast of Buffalo.

Harris Hill is in the southwest part of the town of Clarence. It is just north of the border with the town of Lancaster. The community is centered around where Main Street (NY Route 5) and Harris Hill Road meet.

Nearby Quarry

Southeast of Harris Hill, in the town of Lancaster, there is a large crushed stone quarry. A quarry is a place where stone is dug out of the ground. This quarry goes down about 30 meters (98 feet) into the bedrock.

The quarry was first opened in 1904. It is now owned by Buffalo Crushed Stone. You can find Buffalo Crushed Stone on the south side of Wehrle Drive. It is just east of Harris Hill Road in Lancaster.

History of Harris Hill

Asa Harris's Tavern, the place Harris Hill is named after, played an important role in history. It was a stop on the Underground Railroad. The Underground Railroad was a secret network of safe houses and routes. It helped enslaved people escape to freedom.

Enslaved people would secretly travel through limestone caves under Main Street. This is now NY Route 5. They would then come out north into a swampy forest. This helped them continue their journey to freedom.

Today, Asa Harris's old tavern building has been used for different businesses. It was once called Home Town Cleaners. Now, it is known as Reed's Laundry and Dry Cleaning.
