Harris Street is a very important road in the Inner West area of Sydney, Australia. It runs through the suburbs of Pyrmont and Ultimo. The street starts at the northern tip of the Pyrmont peninsula. It then goes all the way to Broadway, which is close to the main city area of Sydney.
Years ago, Harris Street was mostly filled with factories and industrial buildings. Places like the Ultimo Power Station and the Government Printing Office were located here. But over time, Pyrmont changed from an industrial area to a place with more homes and businesses. Now, important places like the University of Technology, Sydney and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) are on Harris Street.
Harris Street's History and Changes
Harris Street has seen many changes over the years. It used to have electric trams running along its entire length. These trams were a popular way to get around.
From Trams to Buses
In the late 1950s, the electric trams were replaced. Instead, bus services started running on Harris Street. This made it easier for people to travel.
Traffic Flow and Road Updates
In May 1980, Harris Street became a one-way street for a while. This change was part of a bigger road project called the Western Distributor. Traffic could only go north from Fig Street to Union Street.
However, in 1995, Harris Street became a two-way street again. This happened after the Western Distributor road was made longer. It was extended to include the Anzac Bridge. Later, in December 1987, another part of Harris Street became one-way. This section, from Mary Ann Street to Broadway, only allowed traffic to go south.
