Discovering Harrismith's Past

How Harrismith Got Its Name

In 1914, a railway line was being built. It connected Narrogin to Kondinin. The government decided to put a railway stop, called a siding, at this spot. They first named it "South Dorakin".

However, the people living nearby didn't like that name. They suggested "Harrismith" instead. This name honored Harry Smith, who was the very first settler in the area. The government agreed to the change. The town was officially recognized, or "gazetted," in 1915.
