Harrison Kelley (born May 12, 1836 – died July 24, 1897) was an important politician from Kansas. He served as a U.S. Representative, which means he was a member of the United States Congress.

Who Was Harrison Kelley?

Harrison Kelley was born William Henry Harrison Kelley in Montgomery Township, Ohio. He went to local schools when he was young. In March 1858, he moved to Coffey County, Kansas, where he would later become a well-known figure.

Harrison Kelley's Military Service

During the Civil War, Harrison Kelley joined the army. He was part of the Fifth Regiment, Kansas Volunteer Cavalry. He started at a lower rank and worked his way up to become a captain. He served as a captain for Company B, Fifth Cavalry, for more than two years. After the war ended in 1865, he returned to Burlington, Kansas. He was also a brigadier general in the Kansas State Militia in 1865.

Harrison Kelley's Political Career

Harrison Kelley had a long career in politics. He served in the Kansas State House of Representatives from 1868 to 1870. This is where laws are made for the state of Kansas.

Harrison Kelley passed away in Burlington, Kansas, on July 24, 1897. He was buried in Bowman Cemetery, near Burlington, Kansas. His life showed how someone could serve their state and country in many different ways, from being a soldier to a lawmaker.
