Harrow on the Hill was a special local area in Middlesex, England. It was called an "urban district." This area existed for about 40 years, from 1894 to 1934.
What Was Harrow on the Hill?
An urban district was a type of local government area in England. It was set up to manage towns and busy areas. These districts were responsible for things like roads, sanitation, and public health. They helped make sure local services worked well for the people living there.
How It Was Created
Harrow on the Hill Urban District was formed in 1894. This happened because of a new law called the Local Government Act 1894. This law changed how local areas were managed across England.
Before this, the area was part of a larger, older "parish" called Harrow on the Hill. A parish was a traditional local area, often linked to a church. The 1894 Act divided this big parish into several new parts. Some parts became new parishes like Harrow Weald, Wealdstone, and Wembley. The remaining part of the original parish then became the new Harrow on the Hill urban district.
Changing Borders
Over time, the exact size of Harrow on the Hill Urban District changed a little. In 1928, it grew slightly. It took in about 101 acres (0.41 square kilometers) from a nearby area. This area was the parish of Northolt, which was no longer a separate parish.
Why It Changed Again
In 1934, Harrow on the Hill Urban District stopped existing. This change happened because of something called a "County Review Order." These orders were part of the Local Government Act 1929. They were used to reorganize local government areas to make them more efficient.
Harrow on the Hill Urban District became part of a larger, new area. This new area was called the Harrow Urban District. This new district was an early version of what we know today as the London Borough of Harrow.
