Harry Hampton's Football Journey

Early Days in Football

Harry Hampton started playing football with the Lilleshall Iron Works team. After that, he joined Wellington Town. In April 1904, he signed a professional contract with Aston Villa for £120. This was a big step in his career.

Star Player at Aston Villa

People knew Harry Hampton as "Happy" Harry Hampton or "The Wellington Whirlwind." He played as a centre forward for Aston Villa from 1904 to 1920. A centre forward is a player who mainly scores goals.

He scored both goals for Aston Villa in the 1905 FA Cup Final against Newcastle United. Harry was a fantastic goalscorer. In 1912, he scored five goals in one match! Aston Villa won that game 10–0 against Sheffield Wednesday. He was also the joint top goalscorer in the First Division during the 1911–12 season.

Between 1913 and 1914, Harry played for the England national team four times. He scored two goals in these games, one against Wales and one against Scotland.

Football During Wartime

Harry Hampton served his country during the First World War. He was in a place called the Somme. After the war, he faced health challenges due to his service. This meant he was not quite the same player as before.

He had scored 242 goals in 376 games for Aston Villa. After the war, he moved to Birmingham. During 1918–19, he also played a few games for Stoke and Fulham.

Success with Birmingham City

At Birmingham, Harry became the star player for the club. They were in the Second Division at the time. He scored 16 goals in the 1920–21 season, making him their top scorer. His goals helped the club win the Second Division title.

Overall, he scored 31 goals in 59 games for Birmingham. After this, he moved to Newport County in Wales.

Later Career and Retirement

While playing for Newport County, Harry scored two goals in 15 games. He then returned to his old club, Wellington Town, for one season.

After he stopped playing, Harry Hampton became a coach. He coached at Preston North End and his former club, Birmingham. Later in life, he ran a catering business in Rhyl. He passed away there in 1963 when he was 77 years old.
