Sans Souci is a small, unincorporated community in St. Clair County, Michigan. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a city or town. It's part of Clay Township.
This community is found on the eastern side of Harsens Island, right along the St. Clair River. Many people also call this area "Harsens Island," which is the name of the local post office. This post office serves not only Harsens Island but also some smaller islands nearby, close to where the river meets Lake St. Clair.

The Story of Sans Souci
Harsens Island was first settled a long time ago, around 1779. The first European settler was James Harsen. By 1783, he had bought the entire island from the Native American people who lived there. For a while, the island was even known as James Island.
How Sans Souci Got Its Name
Sans Souci started as a busy place for shipping and trading on Harsens Island. It got its own post office on April 24, 1900. The first postmaster, William LaCroix, suggested the name "Sans Souci." This is a French phrase that means "without care." He chose it because he felt the island was a very peaceful place. However, the post office name was changed to Harsens Island on December 31, 1960.
Life in Sans Souci Today
The community of Sans Souci uses the Harsens Island post office, which has the ZIP Code 48028. This post office delivers mail to all of Harsens Island and other small islands nearby, like Dickinson Island. The name "Sans Souci" is no longer used for mail delivery.
Students from this community go to school in Algonac, which is a city located across the river. Even though there used to be schools on Harsens Island, there isn't an active school building there anymore.
