History of Hartsville
Hartsville was started in 1832. It was named after Gideon B. Hart, who was one of the first people to settle there. The town got its first post office in 1838.

Hartsville College
Hartsville was once home to a school called Hartsville College. It started as Hartsville Academy in 1850. Later, in 1897, it joined with Central College, which is now known as Huntington University. This meant Hartsville became a smaller school that prepared students for Central College.
Sadly, the college building burned down in 1898. People thought the fire might have been set on purpose.
An interesting fact about Hartsville College is that Milton Wright taught there. He was a professor of theology from 1868 to 1869. Milton Wright is famous for being the father of Orville and Wilbur Wright, who invented the airplane! Milton Wright also met his future wife, Susan, when they were both students at Hartsville College in 1853.

- George Tremain was a judge on the Indiana Supreme Court. This is the highest court in the state of Indiana.
