Harvey Lowell Wollman (born May 14, 1935 – died October 18, 2022) was an American politician. He served as the 26th Governor of South Dakota from 1978 to 1979. Before that, he was the Lieutenant Governor of South Dakota. He was the first Lieutenant Governor in South Dakota's history to become Governor. He was also the most recent Democrat to hold the governor's office in South Dakota for many years.

Harvey Wollman's Early Life
Harvey Wollman was born on May 14, 1935, in Frankfort, South Dakota. His parents were Edwin J. and Katherine Wollman. He finished high school in Doland in 1953.
He went to Bethel College in St. Paul, Minnesota, from 1954 to 1955. Then, he attended Huron College from 1956 to 1957. He served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960. In 1961, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Huron College.
From 1961 to 1965, Harvey Wollman worked as a teacher at Doland High School. In 1965, he did more studies at the University of South Dakota. After that, he became a farmer.
Political Career and Public Service
Starting in Politics
Harvey Wollman was the leader of the Democratic Party in Spink County, South Dakota. He first ran for the South Dakota State Senate in 1966 but did not win. He ran again in 1968 and won. He was re-elected in 1970. After the 1970 election, he was chosen as the minority leader in the Senate.
In 1974, he was elected Lieutenant Governor. He ran with Richard F. Kneip, who became Governor.
Becoming Governor
In 1978, Wollman wanted to become governor. He ran in the Democratic primary election but lost to State Senator Roger D. McKellips.
However, Governor Kneip resigned on July 24, 1978. He left to become the United States Ambassador to Singapore. Because of this, Harvey Wollman, as Lieutenant Governor, became the new Governor of South Dakota. His brother, Roger Leland Wollman, who was the Chief Justice of the South Dakota Supreme Court, swore him into office.
Wollman served as governor until January 1, 1979. During his time in office, he worked to quickly remove the state property tax. He also helped increase the money for higher education. Bill Janklow, a Republican, became the next governor.
Later Political Interests
After his term, Wollman stayed interested in politics. He thought about running for the United States Senate in 1984. Instead, he decided to run for his old seat in the state senate in 1984. He hoped to run for governor again in 1986. However, he lost the state senate election to the Republican, Mary McClure.
Personal Life and Family
Harvey Wollman married Ann Geigel. They had two sons, Michael and Daniel, and one daughter, Kristine.
He passed away in Huron, South Dakota, on October 18, 2022. He was 87 years old.
Legacy and Background
Wollman's family came from Russia and had German roots. He was a member of the Ebenezer Mennonite Brethren Church, which closed in the mid-1990s.
