Harvey Lee (born in 1819, died in 1866) was an important person who worked as a lawyer, a politician, a judge, and a soldier. He was a captain in the Mexican–American War and later a high-ranking officer (a lieutenant colonel) with the California Volunteers during the American Civil War.

Early Life and Military Service

Harvey Lee was born in 1819. He grew up in Fayette County, Illinois. When the Mexican–American War began, he joined the army. He became a captain of a company from Alton, Illinois. His unit was part of the 2nd Illinois Volunteers; for the war with Mexico. They served from August 1847 to July 1848. His company was stationed in Tampico and did not see any fighting during the war.

Moving to California and Becoming a Politician

After the Mexican War, Harvey Lee moved to California. He started working as a lawyer in a town called Benicia, California. In 1853, he married Mary Ferguson, who was also from Benicia.

Lee became interested in politics. In 1858, people in Amador County elected him to be a member of the California State Assembly. This is like being a representative in the state's government. After this, he was chosen to be the recorder for the California Supreme Court. This was a new way of choosing the recorder, and the judges of the court were not happy about it. There were disagreements about his work, and he eventually left that position.

Service During the American Civil War

When the American Civil War started, Harvey Lee joined the army again. In 1861, he became a lieutenant colonel in the 4th Infantry California Volunteers. He served in different places, including Benicia and San Pedro at Camp Drum.

From February to April 1863, he was the Commander of the District of Southern California. In March 1863, he was sent to Fort Yuma. While there, he played a part in an important event. He either signed as a witness or confirmed a copy of a peace treaty. This treaty was made on April 9, 1863, between the Native American tribes living along the Colorado River and in western Arizona. After this, he faced some health challenges and was relieved of his command at Fort Yuma. He then resigned from the Army.

Later Life and Passing

After his military service, Harvey Lee returned to politics. In 1865, he was elected again to the California State Assembly, representing a different district. He served in the Assembly until 1866. That year, he was appointed as a District Judge for the 16th Judicial District.

Sadly, he held this judge position for only a short time. Harvey Lee passed away on August 19, 1866, at the age of 47. He died in a buggy accident. He was buried in the Sacramento City Cemetery.
