Hasan Abidi (Urdu: حسن عابدی) was a famous Pakistani journalist, writer, and poet. He was born on July 7, 1929, and passed away on September 6, 2005. He also worked as a political activist and helped workers through trade unions.

About Hasan Abidi

Hasan Abidi was born in Zafarabad, India. He studied in Azamgarh and Allahabad. After India was divided in 1947, he moved to Pakistan. He settled in Karachi in 1948. There, he started his career in journalism and writing.

His Work as a Journalist

Hasan Abidi began working as a journalist in 1955. His first job was at an Urdu newspaper called Afaq. In 1957, he joined Lail-o-Nahar magazine. Famous writers Faiz Ahmad Faiz and Sibte Hassan edited this magazine. They were part of the Progressive Writers Association. This group believed that writers should use their skills to help society. They greatly influenced Hasan Abidi.

Later, he moved to Karachi and worked for Akhbar-e-Khwateen magazine. He soon became its editor. After that, he joined the well-known Dawn newspaper.

Helping Workers and Journalists

Hasan Abidi was a strong supporter of workers' rights. He was known as a "trade unionist." This means he worked to improve conditions for people in their jobs. He became the president of the Karachi Press Club. He also held important positions in the Karachi Union of Journalists. He was also active in the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists. This shows how much he cared about his fellow journalists.

What Hasan Abidi Wrote

Hasan Abidi was a talented poet. He wrote both ghazals and nazms. These are two different styles of Urdu poetry. His poems often talked about society and politics. He wrote about how values were changing, which he found troubling.

Hasan Abidi passed away on September 6, 2005, at the age of 76. He died from a heart attack in Karachi. He had just finished writing his latest newspaper column the night before. He had faced heart problems before, but he always recovered and kept working hard. He left behind his wife, a son, and two daughters.

A few weeks after his death, the Karachi Press Club and the Progressive Writers Association held an event. They gathered to honor Hasan Abidi and remember his important contributions.
