Hasan Kwame Jeffries (born January 13, 1973) is a history professor and author at The Ohio State University. He teaches about American history, especially African-American history. His brother is Hakeem Jeffries, who is a leader in the U.S. House of Representatives. His uncle is Leonard Jeffries, a former professor.
About His Life
Hasan Kwame Jeffries was born in Brooklyn, New York City. He went to Morehouse College and graduated with top honors in 1994. He earned his Ph.D. in American history from Duke University in 2002.
After teaching for a year at the University of Alabama, he joined the faculty at Ohio State University in 2003.
Working with History
From 2010 to 2014, Professor Jeffries was the main historian and writer for a big project. This project was the $27 million update of the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tennessee. This museum is at the Lorraine Hotel, a very important place in Civil Rights history.
He also worked on a TV show for PBS called Black America Since MLK. This show looked at the history of Black America since Martin Luther King Jr.'s time.
Teaching Hard History
Professor Jeffries hosts a podcast called "Teaching Hard History." This podcast is for the Southern Poverty Law Center's education group, Teaching Tolerance. The podcast helps teachers learn how to teach difficult parts of history.
He has been interviewed by NPR about how history is taught in schools. He has also appeared on C-SPAN many times to talk about history and current events. In 2010, he gave a speech at Swarthmore College about the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). SNCC was a group that played a big role in the Civil Rights Movement.
His Books
Hasan Kwame Jeffries wrote a book about the fight for Civil Rights in Lowndes County, Alabama. This book shares the stories of people who worked for change in that area.
He also edited a collection of essays called The Civil Rights Movement: A Documentary Reader. This book brings together writings from different experts on the Civil Rights Movement.
