Sayyid Hashem Bathaie Golpayegani (Persian: سید هاشم بطحایی گلپایگانی; 1941 – 16 March 2020) was an important religious leader and politician from Iran. He was known as an Ayatollah, which is a high-ranking title for Shia religious scholars. He also served as a representative for Tehran Province in a group called the Assembly of Experts in Iran.

Hashem Bathaie Golpayegani was born in 1941. He spent many years studying at the Qom Seminary. This is a very important school for religious education in Iran. His studies helped him become a respected religious scholar.

His Battle with COVID-19
On February 22, he announced that he had caught COVID-19. He believed he had recovered using a special "Islamic remedy." However, his health worsened. About three weeks later, on March 14, he was taken to the hospital. News reports confirmed he had the coronavirus. Sadly, on March 16, 2020, Hashem Bathaie Golpayegani passed away from the virus.
