Early Life and Football Start
Hassan Maatouk was born on August 10, 1987, in Sir el Gharbiyeh, Lebanon. In 1989, his family moved to Germany because of the Lebanese Civil War. In Germany, Hassan started playing football with the youth team of Rot-Weiss Essen for three years.
He was very talented, and scouts from the German team Schalke noticed him. However, his family had to return to Lebanon in 1998, which ended his chance to play for Schalke. Maatouk said his time in Europe was very important for him to become a better player.
Back in Lebanon, Maatouk played for Sagesse's youth team. He didn't sign a long-term contract, which was common back then. At 15, Jamal Al Haj, a supervisor for Ahed's youth team, saw him play. Maatouk eventually signed with Ahed for $2,000 and a monthly salary of $150. This helped his family when their minibus, their only source of income, broke down.
