The Hattah-Kulkyne National Park is a special protected area in Victoria, Australia. It's located in a dry, sandy region called the Mallee district. This huge park covers about 48,000 hectares (that's like 480 square kilometers!).

You can find the park next to the Murray River, which is Australia's longest river. It's about 417 kilometers northwest of Melbourne, and the closest big town is Mildura. The Hattah-Kulkyne National Park was officially created on 7 June 1960. It's a popular spot for people who love to go bushwalking and for school groups on camping trips.

What's the Park Like?

This park is part of the Mallee district, which is famous for its red soil and unique plants. Most of the plants here are eucalypt trees and shrubs that are good at living in dry places.

The park has several lakes, and the biggest one is Lake Hattah. But be aware, during the dry season, many of these lakes and the small streams that feed them can dry up completely! Even though it's a wild area, you might see some power lines or telegraph lines running through or near the park. These areas are usually cleared to keep the lines safe.

The Hattah-Kulkyne National Park is managed together with other parks in the Victorian Mallee region. These include the Murray-Sunset National Park, Wyperfeld National Park, Lake Albacutya Park, and Murray-Kulkyne Park.

Amazing Birds!

If you love birds, this park is a fantastic place to visit! More than 200 different kinds of birds have been seen here. The park is part of a larger area called the Murray-Sunset, Hattah and Annuello Important Bird Area (IBA).

An IBA is a place identified by BirdLife International as being very important for bird conservation. This particular IBA is special because it has a lot of mallee habitat. This habitat helps protect many threatened mallee birds. Some of these rare birds include the malleefowl, the black-eared miner, and the mallee emu-wren. It's a great spot for birdwatching!
