Haukur Hilmarsson (born July 22, 1986 – died February 24, 2018) was an Icelandic political activist. An activist is someone who works to bring about social or political change. Haukur was very important in starting a movement to help refugees in Iceland.
He became well-known during the 2009 Icelandic financial crisis protests. These protests happened because of a big economic problem in Iceland. During this time, Haukur climbed onto the roof of the Icelandic parliament building. He then put up the flag of a supermarket chain called Bónus on the flagpole. When he was later held by police, many protesters gathered. They wanted him to be released, and he was.
Haukur's Time in Syria
Haukur traveled to Syria in 2017. There, he joined a group called the Revolutionary Union for Internationalist Solidarity (RUIS). This group was part of a larger organization known as the International Freedom Battalion. He worked alongside another group called the YPG.
He took part in the fight to free the city of Raqqa in 2017. This was a very important event in the conflict happening in Syria.
His Death in Syria
On March 6, 2018, news from Turkey reported that Haukur had died. They said he was killed in a Turkish airstrike in Afrin on February 24, 2018. An airstrike is an attack by military aircraft. As of February 2021, his body had not been found.
