Hawleyville is a small community in Fairfield County, Connecticut. It is part of the larger town of Newtown. Hawleyville is located about one mile outside the main area of Newtown. Before the 2020 census, it was known as a census-designated place. This means it was a special area set up just for counting people and gathering population information.
Hawleyville's History
Hawleyville got its name from the family of Glover Hawley. Mr. Hawley made this a condition when he sold land to the Housatonic Railroad Company in the 1800s. For a short time, Hawleyville became an important center for railroads. This helped Newtown's population grow to over 4,000 people around 1881.
Railroads in Hawleyville
Several important railroads passed through Hawleyville. These included the New York and New England Railroad. There was also the Hawleyville Branch of the Danbury and Norwalk Railroad. As of 2018, the Housatonic Railroad Company still owns a facility in Hawleyville. This facility helps move wood and other large goods.
Modern Services
Hawleyville received a sewer system in 2001. This system was later made bigger in 2016. The community uses the sewage plant in nearby Danbury, Connecticut.
