The Hayes Mansion is a beautiful old estate in San Jose, California. It's a special building that used to be a family home. Today, it's a fancy hotel and resort called the Hayes Mansion Hotel.

This mansion is a great example of a building style called Mediterranean Revival architecture. It was built a long time ago. It's so important that it's listed as a California Historical Landmark and on the National Register of Historic Places.

History of Hayes Mansion

Hayes mansion is one of the best examples of Mediterranean Revival architecture in the Silicon Valley.

Building a New Home

The original Hayes family home burned down in 1899. Mary Chynoweth, who was Anson Hayes's widow, wanted a new house. She hired an architect named George Page in 1903.

The new mansion was built to be a home for Mary, her husband Thomas Chynoweth, and her two sons, Everis A. Hayes and Jay Orly Hayes. It was designed with the newest safety features, especially to prevent fires.

A Self-Sufficient Estate

The Hayes Mansion property was very independent back then. It had its own power plant to make electricity. There was also a post office and a railroad station right on the property.

The estate grew its own fruits and vegetables. They also raised their own animals for food. About 40 ranch workers lived there. The family even had a small chapel.

Family Legacy and Famous Visitors

Mary's sons, Everis and Jay Hayes, helped the fruit industry grow in the Santa Clara Valley. They also became the owners of a newspaper called the San Jose Mercury.

Because of their importance, three different U.S. Presidents visited the mansion while the Hayes family lived there.

From Home to Hotel

The Hayes family sold the property in the 1950s. After that, the mansion was empty for a while and started to fall apart.

In the 1990s, the City of San Jose bought the property. They fixed it up and made it bigger. Today, the building has about 33,000 square feet (3,066 square meters) of meeting space. It also has 214 guest rooms. The mansion is surrounded by a 20-acre (8-hectare) park.

Architecture and Design

Mediterranean Style

The Hayes Mansion is a 41,000-square-foot (3,809-square-meter) Mediterranean villa. This style often includes features from Spanish and Italian buildings.

The mansion has beautiful details like exotic woods and imported marble. It also has fancy stained glass windows.

Unique Shape and Features

The building is shaped like a Maltese Cross. This means it has four arms of equal length, like a plus sign. A long section in the middle has an 18-foot (5.45-meter) wide solarium. This sunny room connects the north and south parts of the mansion.

A loggia, which is a covered walkway, connects the east and west sides. The walls are made of double brick covered in stucco. For fire safety, there are fire hose cabinets connected to water tanks on the third floor. The kitchen is in a separate building, connected to the mansion by a glass and marble conservatory.
