Hazelbrook is a town in the beautiful Blue Mountains area of New South Wales, Australia. It sits about 675 meters above sea level. You can find it about 91 kilometers west of Sydney and 16 kilometers east of Katoomba, right on the Great Western Highway.

Discovering Hazelbrook's Story

Hazelbrook got its name from a house called Hazelbrook House. This house was built in the 1870s by a person named Svonte Noles. The name "Hazelbrook" became official in 1894 when the Hazelbrook railway station opened right across from the house.

Old Buildings and Cool Waterfalls

While Hazelbrook House is no longer there, another old building called Selwood House still stands. It's a heritage-listed building, meaning it's important to history. Today, it's home to a veterinary clinic.

Hazelbrook is also known for its amazing waterfalls! On the south side of the town, you can find Terrace Falls, Victor Falls, and Bedford Pool. These waterfalls are connected to the nearby town of Lawson by a walking path called the South Lawson Waterfall Circuit. On the north side, you can explore Lyre Bird Glen, Oaklands Falls, Horseshoe Falls, and Burgess Falls. They are all great spots to visit!

Growing Community Life

After World War I, Hazelbrook started to grow a lot. More than 100 new houses were built, and the town became a busier place.

The 1st Hazelbrook Scout group was started way back in 1922. It's one of five Scout groups in the Blue Mountains area. In October 2022, the 1st Hazelbrook Scout group celebrated its 100th birthday! That's a long time helping young people learn and grow.

  • The Korowal School (which teaches from Kindergarten all the way to high school, known as HSC)
  • Blue Mountains Steiner (for Pre-School to Year 6)

There are also two child care centers for younger kids.

The town has a handy shopping center. Here you'll find a supermarket and many other shops, restaurants, and cafes.

Local Heroes: Firefighters

The Hazelbrook volunteer Rural Fire Brigade was formed in 1959 by people living in the community. They are one of 26 rural fire brigades in the Blue Mountains. These brave volunteers help keep the community safe from bushfires. The Hazelbrook brigade has three fire trucks: one large Category 1 fire tanker and two smaller Category 7 fire tankers.
