Communities in Hazelton Township

Hazelton Township is home to a few smaller communities, each with its own story.

Hazelton

The community of Hazelton is a small, historic place near the center of the township. It was once called "Ratville." In 1863, about 400 people lived here. The community had a post office, a general store, and three churches. Its economy was mostly based on farming. However, the population slowly decreased, and the post office closed in 1902.

Juddville

Juddville is another small, historic community in the southern part of the township. It was named after the Judd family. John Judd bought a lot of land here in 1853. He and his wife, Matilda, cleared the land and built a log schoolhouse in 1854. Their oldest daughter, Jane, was the first teacher there.

In 1879, a post office called "Judd's Corners" opened. By 1881, Juddville had a sawmill, a blacksmith shop, a general store, a creamery, and two churches. The community had its largest population in the 1880s, with about 175 people. Like Hazelton, its population later declined, and the post office closed in 1902. A schoolhouse built in 1903 is now marked with a historical sign.

New Lothrop

New Lothrop is a village located in the northeast part of Hazelton Township.

History of Hazelton Township

The first settlers, Stanton Latham and E.E. Fowls, arrived in the area in 1848. The township and its main settlement were named after three brothers: George, Edgar, and Porter Hazelton. Along with Ezekial Ewing, they built a bridge across the Flint River for the State of Michigan in 1849. Since the state didn't have money to pay them, the brothers received most of the land that makes up the township today. They then sold this land to other settlers who came to live there.
