Mauritania has had nine different people serve as its head of state. One person, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, held the position two separate times.
The current head of state is President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani. He has been in office since August 1, 2019.

Presidential Term Limits
In Mauritania, the president can serve for a maximum of two terms. Each term lasts for five years. This rule is part of the country's Constitution of Mauritania.
The first president to follow these term limits was Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz in 2019. This means he did not try to stay in power for more than two terms.
