Ismail Ould Bedde Ould Cheikh Sidiya was born on March 17, 1961. He is a politician from Mauritania, a country in West Africa. He served as the 15th Prime Minister of Mauritania from August 5, 2019, to August 6, 2020.
Before becoming Prime Minister, he was in charge of the Ministry of Housing, Town Planning and Regional Development from 2009 to 2014. He also led the Nouadhibou Free Zone, which is a special economic area. He was one of the people who helped start the Union for the Republic political party.
Early Life and Career
Ismail Ould Bedde Ould Cheikh Sidiya was born in a town called Boutilimit in Mauritania. He studied engineering at a famous school in France called Central School of Paris. He also did more studies in the cities of Toulouse and Paris.
He started his career working for a big company called SNIM, which deals with industry and mining. He was the head of their planning department. Later, he became the General Manager of CompuNet and then ETASCO Research Department. He also helped coordinate a project to build a new town in Boutilimit.
In 2008, a town called Tindame was badly damaged by heavy rains. Ismail Ould Bedde Ould Cheikh Sidiya became the general director of the government group in charge of rebuilding it.
Government Roles
From 2009 to 2014, he worked as the Minister of Housing, Town Planning and Regional Development. This job meant he was in charge of how cities were planned and how people got homes. During this time, he also served as the president of the Nouadhibou Free Zone.
After 2014, he didn't have a specific government job, but he continued to be active with his political party.
On August 3, 2019, the President of Mauritania, Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, chose him to be the new Prime Minister. Ismail Ould Bedde Ould Cheikh Sidiya had supported President Ghazouani during his election campaign in the Gorgol Region. Some people wondered if his appointment meant that the old ways of doing things would continue.
Views on Housing and Development
In 2010, when he was the Minister of Housing, Town Planning and Regional Development, Ismail Ould Bedde Ould Cheikh Sidiya talked about the challenges of housing. He explained that it was harder for people to find homes because of economic inequality, meaning some people had much more money than others.
He also said that not having a home was a major reason for poverty and exclusion. He pointed out that many countries in the Arab world were seeing more people moving from the countryside to cities. This movement is called rural flight and urbanization.
He mentioned that Mauritania had a plan to improve areas outside of the capital city, Nouakchott, and other regional cities. The goal was to help people who were struggling to get access to important resources.
