Heather Shimmen (born 8 November 1957) is an Australian artist. She creates paintings, prints, and collages. Her art often uses interesting images from history, especially from the 1500s to the 1800s. These images can sometimes look a bit mysterious or even spooky!

About Heather Shimmen

Heather Shimmen was born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1957. She showed a strong interest in drawing from a young age.

When she was 14, Heather had a very important experience. She visited Papua New Guinea (PNG) with her family. Her parents had a farm there, and she met tribal people for the first time. She saw their unique body art, like piercings and tattoos. This trip really influenced her art later on.

Heather studied art at RMIT University. She graduated in 1978 with a special degree called a Bachelor of Fine Arts. She also received two grants from the Australia Council, which helps artists. In 1998, she won a big prize called the Silk Cut award for her linoleum prints.

She has traveled a lot, both in Australia (like to Arnhem Land) and to other countries. She has spent time in cities like Berlin, London, and New York City.

Besides making her own art, Heather has also taught art. She has worked as an artist-in-residence and a tutor at places like RMIT. She was also part of a fun art group called Refluxus.

Heather has been an artist in residence at the Art Vault Mildura. Other famous artists like Mike Parr and Rick Amor have also worked there. She currently lives in Melbourne with her family.

Heather's Artworks

Heather Shimmen's art shows her interest in images from the 16th to 19th centuries. She often explores themes like old European poets, royalty, and tribal societies. She also looks at ideas about dreams, history, and how things change over time.

Her linoleum prints are very special. They are often based on old pictures called engravings. These prints show how skilled she is as an artist.

You can find Heather's artwork in many important places. These include the National Gallery of Australia and the Australian War Memorial. Her art is also in the National Museum of Australia and the State Library of Victoria. Many other public and private collections around the world own her pieces.
