Exploring Heaton, North Dakota
Heaton is a quiet spot in North Dakota. It's known for its small size and a bit of history. The community is part of Wells County.
A Look at Heaton's Past
Heaton has an interesting history. In 1907, a powerful tornado caused a lot of damage to the community. Some people believe this event was a big reason why the town started to decline. It made it harder for Heaton to grow and thrive.
A person named Gordon Kahl was born in Heaton. He became known later in life for his views on taxes and government.
Life in Heaton Today
Starting in the late 1990s, and picking up speed in the mid-2000s, many of the old, empty buildings in Heaton were taken down. This happened because some properties were given to the county. This was often due to property taxes not being paid.
The local township, called Speedwell, decided to remove many of these properties. They did this because the old buildings were becoming health hazards. One building, a former gas station, was bought and changed into a business that processes meat. It's called Miller Game Processing. As of 2016, the community of Heaton had a population of just one person.
