What's in a Name?
The name Hebble comes from an old local word. It means a narrow, short bridge made of planks. So, the brook might have been known for such bridges!
Ogden Water: The Brook's Start
Hebble Brook begins at Ogden Water. This is a large reservoir. Water flows into it from nearby hills and valleys. These include Skirden Edge and Ogden Clough.
Building the Reservoir
The construction of Ogden Water began in 1854. About 500 workers helped build it. The reservoir was finished in 1858. It was built to supply fresh water to Halifax.
How Big is Ogden Water?
Ogden Water is about 19 meters (62 feet) deep. It can hold 1,000,000 cubic meters (35,000,000 cubic feet) of water. The water flows to Halifax using only gravity.
A Nature Spot
The reservoir is surrounded by a 60-acre nature reserve. This area has both conifer and broad-leaf trees. It's a popular place, attracting 300,000 visitors each year.
Hebble Brook's Journey
The Hebble Brook starts its journey south from Ogden Reservoir. It flows past several places.
Flowing Through Towns
First, the Middle Grain Beck and Carrs Beck join the Hebble Brook. This happens near the Halifax golf course. The brook then continues past Mixenden. Here, small springs add more water.
It flows past Ovenden and Wheatley. In some areas, like Brackenbed Sports Park, the brook flows underground. It goes above and below ground until it reaches Sedburgh Road in Halifax.
Joining the River Calder
Near Halifax, the Ovenden Brook also joins the Hebble. The brook then flows openly next to the Halifax Branch of the Calder and Hebble Navigation. This is a canal system. Finally, the Hebble Brook flows into the River Calder.
The village of Salterhebble gets its name from the brook. This is where the Hebble joins the River Calder. There used to be a pub there called "The Calder and Hebble."
How the Land Shapes the Brook
The Environment Agency says the brook starts near the Ogden wind farm. This is about 2.5 kilometers (1.6 miles) west of Ogden Water.
Valleys and Waterfalls
The water flows through Ogden Clough. This is a narrow valley. The valley is made of mudstones and sandstones. Mudstone wears away easily. Sandstone is much harder. This difference creates many small waterfalls along the brook's path.
