Hedesunda is a lovely place in Sweden, located in Gävle Municipality within Gävleborg County. It's a small community with about 1,028 people living there as of 2010. Hedesunda used to be its own municipality, but now it's part of Gävle.

The main village in Hedesunda is called Brunn. Brunn and its nearby areas have about 1,100 residents. In the past, the whole Hedesunda municipality had around 2,800 people. At the start of the 1900s, there were about 5,000 citizens. The population has been growing again since the early 2000s. The land around Hedesunda has lots of low-lying forests, open fields, and marshy areas.

Exploring Hedesunda's Nature and History

Hedesunda offers many chances to enjoy the outdoors. You can go fishing or do other fun activities near the Dalälven river.

Discovering the Silver Mine

In Brunn, you can find a rebuilt silver mine. This project, called Brunns Silfvergrufva, gets help from the European Union. Experts believe the original mine was used a long time ago, between the 13th and 14th centuries.

Getting Around Hedesunda

Big cities like Uppsala and Gävle are only about an hour away by car. If you're flying in, Sweden's main airport, Arlanda, is about 90 minutes away.

The Island of Ön

The area called Ön is actually an island. It's part of a long, winding ridge made of sand and gravel, called an esker. Ön is a central spot for culture in Hedesunda. It's close to the Dalälven river and has bridges at both ends.

If you come to Hedesunda from the south, you can reach Ön by turning right about 10 kilometers after Tärnsjö on national road 56. Then, drive towards Söderfors. From the north, you can get to Ön by taking national road 56 towards Valbo. Valbo has the biggest shopping center nearby. You can also reach Hedesunda by driving along the European route E4 and turning towards Söderfors.

Ön is part of a 100-kilometer long esker. These long ridges of sand and gravel are found in places that used to be covered by glaciers, like parts of Europe and North America.

At Ön, you'll find a place for dancing, small bays, and beautiful open landscapes. There's also a camping ground called Hedesunda Camping. It has cabins and spots for caravans and tents. At the campsite, you can easily get to the beach called Sandsnäsbadet.

Hedesunda's Long History

People have lived in Hedesunda for a very long time, since the Stone Age around 3500 BCE. One interesting discovery is about early iron use here. The oldest written records in the area are runic stones and a rare stone carving from 970 CE. This carving is special because such carvings are usually not found so far north of Lake Mälaren. The only ancient castle in Gästrikland is also located in Hedesunda.

Records show that the archbishop Nils Allesson visited Hedesunda parish in 1302 CE. There's also a collection of notes from 1402 CE called "Svarta-brevet" that talks about land boundaries. This old document mentions about 16 small villages around Hedesunda.

The church records from Hedesunda have been kept very carefully. More than 30,000 people are listed in them. This information has been put into a book for people who study family history, called genealogists. It's a huge book, with two parts, each about 900 pages long. The newest version was printed in 1997.
