Gävle Municipality (which is Gävle kommun in Swedish) is a local government area in east central Sweden. The main town and administrative center is the city of Gävle.

This municipality is located north of where the Dalälven river meets the sea. It is the southernmost part of the historical region called Norrland.

The Gävle Municipality we know today was formed in 1971. It was created when the old City of Gävle joined together with four smaller towns nearby. These towns had been separate municipalities since 1862.

Geography of Gävle Municipality

Gävle is located right by the Baltic Sea, close to the mouth of the Dalälven river. It sits at about 60 degrees north and 17 degrees east. This means it's on the same line of latitude as Helsinki, Finland. It also shares the same longitude as cities like Vienna, Austria, and Cape Town, South Africa.

The climate in Gävle is similar to other parts of central Sweden. It has a humid continental climate. This means it has cold winters and warm summers. The average temperature in January is about -5 degrees Celsius (23°F). In July, it's around 17 degrees Celsius (63°F). The area gets about 600 millimeters (24 inches) of rain each year.

Did you know that Gävle Municipality is home to something unique? Mackmyra Whisky is located in Valbo, a suburb of Gävle. It is the only whisky distillery in all of Sweden. They have been making Malt whisky there since 1999.
