Heiltsuk is a special language spoken by the First Nations peoples in a beautiful part of British Columbia, Canada. You might also hear it called Haíɫzaqv, Bella Bella, or Haihais. It's a dialect, which means it's a unique version, of a bigger language called Heiltsuk-Oowekyala.
Heiltsuk is spoken by the Haihai (Xai'xais) and Bella Bella First Nations. These communities live along the coast of British Columbia. The main places where you can hear Heiltsuk are the villages of Bella Bella and Klemtu. Bella Bella is also the main centre for the Heiltsuk Nation government.

What is the Heiltsuk Language?
Heiltsuk is one of four languages in the Northern Wakashan language family. Think of a language family like your own family tree! The other languages in this group are Haisla, Oowekyala, and Kwakwala. Each of these languages is spoken in different coastal communities in British Columbia.
